Oral findings in osteoporosis. Part II: Relationship between residual ridge and alveolar bone resorption and generalized skeletal osteopenia.

چکیده
0 steoporosis is a major health problem for the elderly.’ The underlying clinical problem is a deficiency of bone mass, or skeletal osteopenia, resulting in fractures of the spine, the distal of the radius and ulna bones, and the neck of the femoral bone. It is estimated that 25% to 30% of all Caucasian women in the United States will experience a fracture related to osteoporosis by age 65.’ A possibly related and significant mandibular osteopenia (residual ridge resorption) appears to occur in edentulous patients, resulting in extensive residual ridge reduction. Extensive loss of bone may occur; and in patients who have no residual ridge, treatment with dentures is difficult and comfort and function are compromised.2-4 It has been suggested that there may be a relationship between residual ridge reduction and osteopenia of the remaining skeleton.‘, 5 It has also been suggested that periodontal disease, tooth mobility, and tooth loss are affected by and related to osteopenia.6-” The purpose of this study was to document the dentai findings in a group of female osteoporotic subjects and to determine the relationship between systemic and oral findings. Dental status was evaluated in terms of loss of mandibular ridge height, mandibular bone density, periodontal bone loss, and loss of teeth. The degree of generalized osteopenia was measured by determining total body calcium (total bone mass) by

Osteoporosis, jawbones and periodontal disease
The association between osteoporosis and jawbones remains an argument of debate. Both osteoporosis and periodontal diseases are bone resorptive diseases; it has been hypothesized that osteoporosis could be a risk factor for the progression of periodontal disease and vice versa. Hypothetical models linking the two conditions exist: in particular, it is supposed that the osteoporosis-related bon...
متن کاملExtraction site reconstruction for alveolar ridge preservation. Part 1: rationale and materials selection.
Alveolar ridge resorption has long been considered an unavoidable consequence of tooth extraction. While the extent and pattern of resorption is variable among individuals, there is a progressive loss of ridge contour as a result of physiologic bone remodeling. Over the long term, prosthodontic complications, loss of function, and inadequate bone for the placement of dental implants may result....
متن کاملSystemic Osteoporosis and Reduction of the Edentulous Alveolar Ridge
Systemic osteoporosis can damage skeletal bones to different degrees or remain persistent in intensity. The aim of this study was to determine the intensity and correlation of the osteoporotic changes in the bone density of the skeleton and body mass index (BMI) with a reduction in edentulous mandibles. Material and Methods: In this study, 89 edentulous patients with decreased bone density comp...
متن کاملThe correlation between postmenopausal osteoporosis and inflammatory periodontitis regarding bone loss in experimental models.
We have invented a mouse model of periodontitis associated with alveolar bone loss induced by lipopolysaccharide. Ovariectomized (OVX) animals are widely used as a model for osteoporosis due to estrogen deficiency. To define the relationship between periodontitis and osteoporosis, we examined the influence of estrogen deficiency on the mouse alveolar bone mass. In OVX mice, bone loss was detect...
متن کاملImpact of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 on residual ridge resorption after tooth extraction: an experimental study in the rat.
Residual ridge resorption begins following tooth extraction and continuously reduces alveolar bone volume, potentially creating a significant problem in dental implant treatment. In this study, the role of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) in residual ridge resorption after tooth extraction was investigated. A polylactic acid/polyglycolic acid copolymer-coated gelatin spo...
